Device Battery Health – A Primer

battery health maximum capacity

Smartphones have rapidly become quintessential to human existence. From text and email to social media and family photos, we do everything on them (except maybe make a call). You can imagine what happens when the battery fails.

And yet, the battery is one of the most neglected parts of the phone. Yes, the display is important, and the camera is extremely popular, but the battery is the heart of the device. Without it, your phone is nothing more than an overpriced paperweight. Ignoring the health of your battery may lead to expensive repairs and replacements and add unnecessary e-waste to the environment.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Battery Health Indicators

There are many ways to care for the health of your device’s battery.

  • Does your battery life deplete faster than when it was new?
  • Does the indicator on the battery percentage continually jump up and down?
  • Does the device need to be constantly plugged in to function properly?
  • Is your phone extremely hot after it finishes charging?

If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, this may be a sign your battery’s health has diminished beyond its usefulness. It’s time to get it serviced.

Ways To Extend the Life of Your Phone

Those who constantly—i.e., several times a day—deplete their batteries to near 0% and then charge them to 100% will see their battery deplete faster. Luckily, iPhones are capable of learning your usage (discharge cycle) and charging (charge cycles) habits. This assists in relaying information that will help the iPhone know when and how fast to charge the battery to extend its life cycle.

But, by being actively aware of how the battery is being depleted, you can help extend your battery’s lifespan.

Check Your Battery Health Measurement

iPhone: If you have an iPhone, Apple conveniently has a built-in health measurement tool that is easily accessed. Simply go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging to see the current maximum capacity of your battery. If the maximum capacity is under 80%, your battery is no longer functioning properly. It’s highly encouraged to have it serviced as soon as possible before any major damage occurs.

Android: Unfortunately, Android and other non-iPhone smartphones do not include a built-in health management system installed. However, you can download apps, such as AccuBattery or Samsung Members app (both available through the Google app store) that will do the same thing as the built-in iPhone app.

Discover Which Apps Utilize the Battery Most Often

Another way to control how your battery operates is to check the battery consumption of each app on your phone. Reducing your usage of these apps or making sure they are turned off when not in use can ease the strain on the battery, especially if you can’t replace the battery right away.

On iPhone, go to Settings > Battery and scroll down to see the app usage.

On Samsung and other smartphones, navigation may vary, but in general, go to Settings > Battery and hit the three dots in the top right corner. Select Battery usage from the list that appears.

Importance of Battery Replacement

Remember, when the battery degrades, the operating system on your phone will slow down to guarantee as much battery life as possible and keep the phone from shutting off unexpectedly. When these things begin to happen, there’s a possibility that the phone may catch fire or start to bloat, both of which will cause much more damage than you would have had had you replaced the battery when the signs first presented themselves.

Best Replacement Options

Replacing the battery is easy, quick, and inexpensive. However, going to an Apple store or other smartphone retailer to have your battery replaced may take several days and cost more depending on the model.

At All Mobile Matters, we can have your battery replaced within an hour at an affordable price. We are also Apple-certified, so we have plenty of Apple OEM battery options to choose from.
