Most Commonly Needed Samsung Galaxy S20 Repairs — Cost, Timeframe, and What Actually Happens During the Process

If you own a Samsung Galaxy S20 and you’re reading this, chances are one of two things is true: either something has gone wrong, or you’re the kind of person who likes to know what they’re getting into before it does. Either way, you’re in the right place. I’ve been repairing Samsung devices at All Mobile Matters for a long time, and the Galaxy S20 is a phone that still crosses our bench regularly — even six years after its release. That tells you something. People love this device and they’re holding onto it, and honestly, we get it. We see these every week across our shops in Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, and Tucson. Let me walk you through everything.

A Quick Look at the Samsung Galaxy S20

The Samsung Galaxy S20 launched on March 6, 2020, and it was a significant leap for the Galaxy S lineup — the first model to feature a 120Hz display across the entire series, and the first to include 5G connectivity on every variant. Here’s what defines this phone and how those design choices translate to the repair bench:

  • Aluminum Frame with Glass Front and Back — The S20 uses a sturdy aluminum chassis sandwiched between Gorilla Glass 6 on both the front and back. The frame itself holds up well under everyday stress, but both glass surfaces are fully exposed — and fully breakable. We see cracked S20 backs and screens in our shops regularly, even now.
  • 6.2-Inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X Display — A vivid, 120Hz panel with HDR10+ support and a curved edge design. The curve looks beautiful, but it also means the glass meets the frame at an angle — which creates a specific vulnerability at the corners and edges that flat-screen designs don’t have. It’s one of the reasons curved displays require extra care during removal.
  • Snapdragon 865 (US Models) — One of the most capable chips of its era, and one that still handles day-to-day tasks without breaking a sweat in 2026. The S20’s longevity is in large part thanks to how well this processor has aged. That said, it runs warm under sustained load, which over six years of use has taken a real toll on battery health — something we see reflected in the volume of battery replacements we perform on this model.
  • Triple Rear Camera System — A 12MP main sensor, 12MP ultra-wide, and 64MP telephoto, positioned in a vertical array in the upper left corner of the back. The camera module protrudes from the rear glass — which means it’s often the first thing to make contact when the phone hits a hard surface at the wrong angle.
  • Ultrasonic In-Display Fingerprint Sensor — Embedded in the lower portion of the display, this sensor is paired to the display assembly. If the screen is replaced without proper calibration, fingerprint performance can be affected. It’s something we handle correctly on every S20 screen repair at our Arizona locations.
  • IP68 Water Resistance — Rated for 30 minutes at 1.5 meters. Worth knowing: any repair that involves opening the device will affect the factory IP rating. We always reseal with fresh adhesive, but the original certification no longer applies after disassembly — something we’re always upfront about with customers.
  • Heavy Adhesive Construction Throughout — This is the defining repair characteristic of the S20, and the one I want to be most honest with you about. The back glass, the battery, and the display are all secured with substantial adhesive. There are no pull tabs on the battery. Every repair on this phone starts with careful heat application, and patience is the most important tool we bring to the bench. More on this below.

It’s a phone that was genuinely ahead of its time in 2020, and one that’s still serving its owners well in 2026. But six years of use means six years of wear — and when something finally gives, here’s exactly what happens in our shops.

Our Repairability Score: 3.5 out of 10

We’ve built our own internal repairability scale over the years — 1 means it’s a device we approach with real apprehension, 10 means a careful person could probably tackle it at home on a Sunday. The Galaxy S20 earns a 3.5 out of 10 from us, and I want to be straightforward about why — because understanding it helps you understand what goes into every repair on this device.

The S20 was notorious in the repair community from the moment iFixit tore it apart in early 2020. Their verdict: a 3 out of 10, citing excessive adhesive throughout, a battery glued down with no pull tabs whatsoever, and a display mounted directly to the frame without the additional support layer that would make removal safer. That last point is particularly significant — it means that on the S20, even a screen removal performed by an experienced technician carries a higher-than-average risk of collateral damage to the OLED panel. We don’t say that to alarm you. We say it because we want you to know exactly what goes into this repair and why it takes the time it does.

The saving grace on the S20, as on the S22, is that Samsung used standard Phillips screws throughout. Once you’re past the adhesive challenges, the internal layout is organized and the components are individually replaceable. That earns back half a point from us.

Samsung’s component pairing is also a factor on this model. The in-display fingerprint sensor communicates directly with the display assembly and the logic board — swapping in a replacement screen without the proper calibration process can leave you with a fingerprint sensor that reads inconsistently or not at all. We manage this correctly at every All Mobile Matters location. When you bring your S20 to us, we do it right.

Our Durability Score: 5.5 out of 10

We track durability separately from repairability because they tell different stories. The Galaxy S20 earns a 5.5 out of 10 for durability — and at six years old, that number reflects real-world performance over time rather than just drop test results.

The aluminum frame is genuinely solid. The Gorilla Glass 6 on the front holds up reasonably well against minor drops, and the IP68 rating has helped more than a few S20s survive accidental splashes and brief water exposure. These are well-built phones.

But here’s what six years on the bench tells us. The curved display edges are beautiful and they were a selling point in 2020 — but in practice, they’re also a consistent source of damage in our shops. Corner drops that a flat-screen phone might survive often result in a cracked edge on the S20’s curved panel. The back glass, secured with adhesive rather than clips, is fragile once the seal has been compromised by a crack. And the battery — which was never the S20’s strongest suit to begin with — has had six years of charge cycles and Arizona heat to contend with. A significant portion of the S20s we see now come in specifically for battery replacement, and the difference in performance after a fresh battery is dramatic.

If your S20 is still running strong six years in, that’s a testament to the hardware. But if it’s showing its age in any of these ways, here’s exactly what happens when you bring it to us.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Screen Repair in Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler & Tucson

The Process

Every repair at All Mobile Matters follows the same intake routine: we log your device, run a full pretest to document what’s working and flag anything that isn’t, confirm the cost with you upfront, and give you an honest time estimate before we touch a thing. If you’ve never brought a device in before, our post on How Does the Device Repair Process Work at All Mobile Matters is worth a read.

For the Galaxy S20 screen specifically, here’s what happens on the bench once we start:

  1. SIM tray out, bottom screws removed. The phone goes on our heating pad to soften the display adhesive around the perimeter. We heat the S20 in sections rather than all at once — the curved edges require more controlled, localized heat than a flat-screen device, and rushing this step is how mistakes happen.
  2. We apply a suction handle and begin working the display free from the aluminum frame, using marked picks to ensure we never go deeper than safe depth. The S20’s OLED panel is mounted directly to the frame without a support bracket — which means lateral flex during this step is a real risk to the panel. We work slowly and deliberately, always keeping upward tension rather than prying sideways.
  3. With the display free, we disconnect the display connector and transfer the in-display fingerprint sensor components to the new panel. We run a full calibration process to ensure the fingerprint sensor performs correctly before reassembling anything — touch response, fingerprint recognition, display quality, and brightness all get tested.
  4. Fresh adhesive goes on around the full frame perimeter. The new display seats into position and we apply gentle, even clamping pressure while the adhesive cures. Bottom screws reinstall and we do a complete function check before the phone goes back in your hand.

We keep Samsung Galaxy S20 screens in stock at our locations serving Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, and Tucson. Given the additional care the curved display and direct-mount construction require, most S20 screen repairs take 90 minutes to two hours. Not the fastest repair in our shop, but one we won’t rush. Current pricing is on our Samsung repair page, and we always confirm the number with you before we start. Not sure which screen grade is right for you? Samsung Galaxy S20 Battery Replacement in Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler & Tucson

The Process

Battery replacement on the Galaxy S20 is one of the more involved jobs we do on this device, and it’s important you understand why. Unlike newer Samsung models that introduced back-entry access or pull-tab battery adhesive, the S20 requires the screen to come off first — and the battery itself is secured with heavy adhesive and no pull tabs whatsoever. Here’s exactly how it unfolds:

  1. Same starting point as the screen repair: SIM tray out, bottom screws removed, heating pad on to soften the display adhesive. The screen has to come off before we can reach anything inside. We give this step the same careful attention we would a dedicated screen repair — if we damage the display getting to the battery, we’ve turned a straightforward job into a significantly more expensive one.
  2. With the screen set safely aside, we remove the mid-frame screws and the interconnect cables sitting above the battery. The S20 has a double-decker motherboard arrangement that requires careful navigation — components are stacked in a way that means you have to work around several cable connections before the battery is accessible.
  3. We apply isopropyl alcohol carefully along all four edges of the battery to begin dissolving the adhesive underneath. The S20’s battery adhesive is notably heavy — more so than on the S22 — and we do not rush this step. A battery that gets pried before the adhesive has fully released is a battery at risk of bending or puncturing. Even a cell that reads zero percent still contains stored energy, and a damaged lithium cell can off-gas or ignite. Every battery we remove goes through this process carefully, and every old battery is disposed of through proper recycling — never the trash.
  4. With adhesive fully released, the battery lifts free cleanly. The new battery goes in, gets connected, and we test charging and power-on before reassembling. Screen reseats with fresh adhesive, screws reinstall, and we run a full function check — fingerprint sensor, display, cameras, charging — before the phone goes back in your hand.

We stock Galaxy S20 batteries at all of our locations. Given the screen-first architecture and the adhesive-heavy battery mount, S20 battery replacements typically take 90 minutes to two hours. Pricing is on our Samsung repair page — confirmed with you before we begin. And given how many S20s we see with degraded batteries at this point in the device’s life, it’s worth pairing a battery replacement with a screen repair if you need both — our bundle pricing makes that combination meaningfully more affordable than two separate visits.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Back Glass Repair in Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler & Tucson

The Process

Back glass on the Galaxy S20 is one of the jobs that rewards patience above everything else — and one where the consequences of impatience are immediate and expensive. The Gorilla Glass 6 back is bonded to the aluminum frame with heavy adhesive all the way around, and the curved corners that define the S20’s look are also the most challenging part of any removal. We’ve done enough of these to have a very healthy respect for this particular job.

  1. Phone on the heating pad. We heat the back glass in sections, working our way around the perimeter methodically. The corners get the most attention — the curve means the glass is under more complex stress during separation than a flat panel, and corners are the most likely place for a crack to propagate if the heat isn’t quite right or the tool goes in at the wrong angle.
  2. We use thin, flexible tools — not rigid picks — along the adhesive bond. The goal is to separate glass from frame without introducing flex into the panel. We move in small increments, re-warming any section that begins to cool and stiffen before we’ve fully released it.
  3. Once the back glass is free, we inspect the frame thoroughly, removing all adhesive residue. Any residue left on the frame will create gaps in the seal on the new glass, reducing water resistance and allowing dust and debris to work their way inside over time.
  4. Replacement back glass goes on with fresh adhesive. We apply even clamping pressure around the full perimeter and allow proper cure time before returning the phone. Full function check — cameras, wireless charging, display, fingerprint sensor — before it leaves our hands.

We stock Galaxy S20 back glass at our locations. Back glass repairs on the S20 are typically completed in under two hours. Pricing is on our Samsung repair page.
