Most Commonly Needed Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Repairs — Cost, Timeframe, and What Actually Happens During the Process

If you own a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and you’re reading this, one of two things is probably true: either something has already gone wrong, or you’re the kind of person who likes to know what they’re getting into before it does. Either way, you’re in exactly the right place. I’ve been repairing Samsung devices at All Mobile Matters for a long time, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra is one of the most impressive — and most involved — phones I work on. When Samsung launched this thing in 2020, they threw every spec they had at it: the biggest display in the lineup, the most cameras, the largest battery, and a price tag to match. People who chose the S20 Ultra knew what they were buying, and they’ve held onto it. We see these every week across our shops in Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, and Tucson. Let me walk you through everything.

A Quick Look at the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra launched on March 6, 2020, as the top-tier flagship in Samsung’s S20 lineup — and it was genuinely extraordinary for its time. At $1,399, it was the most expensive Galaxy S model Samsung had ever released, and it backed that price up with specs that were still impressive years later. Here’s what defines this phone and how those choices play out on the repair bench:

  • Aluminum Frame with Gorilla Glass 6 Front and Back — The same sturdy aluminum chassis as the S20 and S20 Plus, sandwiched between Gorilla Glass 6 on both sides. The frame is solid, but both glass surfaces are fully exposed — and six years of daily carry means most of the S20 Ultras we see have at least one battle scar.
  • 6.9-Inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X Display — A 6.9-inch Quad HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 511 pixels per inch — the largest and sharpest screen in the S20 lineup. It’s a stunning panel. The curved edges, however, create the same corner vulnerability we see on the S20 and S20 Plus, and the sheer size of the display means there’s significantly more surface area to manage during any removal.
  • 5,000mAh Battery — A massive upgrade in battery capacity over the rest of the S20 lineup, and one of the reasons people chose the Ultra in the first place. Six years of charge cycles and Arizona summers have taken a real toll on most of the S20 Ultras we see today — battery replacement is the single most common repair we perform on this device.
  • Snapdragon 865 (US Models) — US models run the Snapdragon 865, while international models use the Exynos 990. The 865 remains genuinely capable in 2026 for everyday tasks, which is the primary reason so many S20 Ultra owners are still holding on rather than upgrading.
  • Quad Rear Camera System — A 108MP main sensor, 48MP periscope telephoto with Space Zoom up to 100x, 12MP ultra-wide, and a DepthVision sensor. The camera module on the S20 Ultra is significantly larger and heavier than on the S20 or S20 Plus — that protruding bump is both a selling point and a structural vulnerability in drop scenarios.
  • Ultrasonic In-Display Fingerprint Sensor — Embedded in the lower portion of the display and paired to the display assembly and logic board. Screen replacement without proper calibration affects fingerprint performance — something we handle correctly at every All Mobile Matters location.
  • IP68 Water Resistance — Rated for 30 minutes at 1.5 meters. Worth knowing: any repair that involves opening the device affects the factory IP rating. We always reseal with fresh adhesive, but the original certification no longer applies after disassembly. We’re always upfront about this.
  • Exceptionally Heavy Adhesive Throughout — This is where I need to be most direct with you. The S20 Ultra’s adhesive is notably heavier than what we find in the S20 and S20 Plus — iFixit specifically noted the glue on the S20 Ultra “seems tougher than usual” during their teardown. The back glass, battery, and display are all held in place with substantial adhesive. Every repair on this phone demands patience, precision, and the right tools — and we have all three.

It was the most ambitious phone Samsung had ever made at the time. Six years later, it’s still earning its keep for most owners. When something finally gives, here’s exactly what happens in our shops.

Our Repairability Score: 3 out of 10

We’ve built our own internal repairability scale over the years — 1 means it’s a device we approach with real apprehension, 10 means a careful person could probably handle it at home on a Sunday. The Galaxy S20 Ultra earns a 3 out of 10 from us — and that score is directly in line with iFixit’s official rating, which also landed at 3 out of 10 following their full teardown.

Let me be honest about what drives that number, because I think customers deserve to understand it.

Every S20 Ultra repair starts with painstakingly ungluing the rear glass cover — and the adhesive on this model is notably more aggressive than on most phones we work on. Replacing the glued-down battery is harder than ever on this device, requiring careful navigation around interconnect cables. And the display situation is the most demanding of all: screen repairs on the S20 Ultra require either a complete teardown or replacing half the phone. That’s not an exaggeration — it’s an accurate description of how this device is built.

The 6.9-inch display is the largest in the S20 lineup, which means every removal involves more surface area, more adhesive perimeter, more potential flex — and more opportunity for something to go wrong if the process is rushed. We don’t rush it.

The saving grace: all fasteners are identical Phillips screws requiring only one driver, and many components are individually replaceable once you’re past the adhesive challenges. Samsung’s component pairing is present on this model — the in-display fingerprint sensor and certain other components require calibration after replacement — and we handle that process correctly at every All Mobile Matters location.

Our Durability Score: 5 out of 10

We track durability separately from repairability because the two tell very different stories. The Galaxy S20 Ultra earns a 5 out of 10 for durability — and six years of real-world performance tells us more than any lab test.

The aluminum frame is solid. The Gorilla Glass 6 on the front holds up reasonably well against minor drops. The IP68 rating has saved more than a few S20 Ultras from water damage over the years. And the sheer size and weight of the device — 220 grams and 8.8mm thick — actually works in its favor in some drop scenarios, as the mass absorbs impact energy differently than lighter phones.

Where we see consistent damage: the back glass and the camera module. That quad-camera array is massive — the largest camera bump Samsung had put on a phone at that point — and it protrudes significantly from the back. Corner drops and face-down falls send that camera housing into the ground first, every time. The back glass, bonded with heavy adhesive, is also more prone to cracking than you might expect from a phone in this price class once the original seal has been compromised.

Battery health is the other dominant story on the S20 Ultra at this point in its life. The 5,000mAh cell was generous for 2020 — but the Snapdragon 865 ran warm, 5G connectivity draws significant power, and six Arizona summers have done real work on most of the batteries we see. If your S20 Ultra isn’t making it through a full day anymore, the battery is almost certainly the issue.

Bottom line: if you’ve kept your S20 Ultra running for six years, that’s a testament to the hardware. When it needs attention, here’s exactly what happens at All Mobile Matters.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Screen Repair in Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler & Tucson

The Process

Every repair at All Mobile Matters follows the same intake routine: we log your device, run a full pretest to document what’s working and flag anything that isn’t, confirm the cost with you upfront, and give you an honest time estimate before we touch a thing. If you’ve never brought a device in before, our post on How Does the Device Repair Process Work at All Mobile Matters is worth a read first.

For the Galaxy S20 Ultra screen specifically, here’s what happens on the bench once we start:

  1. SIM tray out, bottom screws removed. The phone goes on our heating pad to soften the display adhesive around the perimeter. The S20 Ultra has the most display real estate of any phone in the S20 lineup — we heat in sections, working slowly and methodically around the full 6.9-inch frame. The curved edges get the most careful attention, as they require localized heat and deliberate tool placement that the flat portions don’t.
  2. We apply a suction handle and begin working the display free from the aluminum frame using marked picks — tools specifically sized and marked so we never go deeper than safe depth at any point. The S20 Ultra’s OLED panel is mounted directly to the frame, meaning lateral flex during removal is a direct risk to the panel. We work with upward tension only, never sideways, and we take the time this step requires.
  3. With the display free, we disconnect the display connector and carefully transfer the in-display fingerprint sensor components to the replacement panel. We run a full calibration process — touch response across the entire 6.9-inch surface, fingerprint recognition, display quality, brightness uniformity — before reassembling anything.
  4. Fresh adhesive goes on around the full frame perimeter. The new display seats into position, we apply even clamping pressure while the adhesive cures, and all screws reinstall. Full function check before the phone goes back in your hand.

We keep Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra screens in stock at our locations serving Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, and Tucson. Given the size of the display, the curved edges, and the care the direct-mount construction demands, S20 Ultra screen repairs typically take two to two and a half hours. This is the most time-intensive screen repair in the S20 series — and it’s time we won’t cut short. Current pricing is on our Samsung repair page, and we confirm the number with you before we start. Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Battery Replacement in Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler & Tucson

The Process

Battery replacement on the S20 Ultra is the repair we perform most often on this device — and I want to be completely transparent about why it takes the time it does. The battery is held in place with strong adhesive requiring high-concentration isopropyl alcohol to loosen and release. And as with every S20 series phone, the screen has to come off first before we can reach anything inside. Here’s exactly how it unfolds:

  1. SIM tray out, bottom screws removed. The phone goes on the heating pad to begin softening the display adhesive — because the screen comes off before we can access the battery on the S20 Ultra. We treat this exactly as we would a dedicated screen repair. A damaged display on the way to the battery turns a routine job into a significantly more expensive one, and that’s not a problem we create.
  2. With the display carefully set aside, we remove the mid-frame screws and navigate through the interconnect cables sitting above the battery. The S20 Ultra’s board interconnect cables require careful navigation — this is a more complex internal layout than the standard S20 or S20 Plus, and it demands methodical work at every step.
  3. We apply isopropyl alcohol carefully along all four edges of the 5,000mAh battery cell to begin dissolving the adhesive. The S20 Ultra’s battery adhesive is among the most aggressive we encounter in the Samsung lineup — we allow full dissolution time before attempting any lift. A battery pried before the adhesive has fully released risks bending or puncturing the cell, and even a battery reading zero percent still contains stored energy. A damaged lithium cell can off-gas or ignite. We handle every battery with that understanding, and we dispose of every old battery through proper recycling — never the trash.
  4. With adhesive fully released, the battery lifts free cleanly. The new 5,000mAh cell goes in, gets connected, and we test charging and power-on before reassembling. Display reseats with fresh adhesive, all screws reinstall, and we run a full function check — fingerprint sensor, display, cameras, charging — before the phone goes back in your hand.

We stock Galaxy S20 Ultra batteries at all of our locations. Given the screen-first access requirement and the exceptionally heavy battery adhesive on this model, S20 Ultra battery replacements typically take two to two and a half hours. Pricing is on our Samsung repair page — confirmed with you before we begin. If you need both a battery and a screen, doing them in the same visit saves significant time and money — our bundle pricing reflects that.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Back Glass Repair in Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler & Tucson

The Process

Back glass repair on the S20 Ultra is the job on this device that requires the most patience — and the most respect for the material. The Gorilla Glass 6 back is bonded to the aluminum frame with adhesive that iFixit described as tougher than usual, and the 6.9-inch chassis means there’s more perimeter to release than on any other phone in the S20 series. The curved corners are the most vulnerable points during any removal, and the sheer size of the panel means more opportunity for the glass to crack during separation if any section cools before it’s fully released. We’ve done enough of these to have a deep appreciation for what this job demands.

  1. Phone on the heating pad. We heat the back glass in small sections, working around the full perimeter of the 6.9-inch chassis systematically. The corners receive the most time and the most careful tool placement — the curve where glass meets frame is structurally the most vulnerable point during separation, and we never rush past it.
  2. We use thin, flexible tools along the adhesive bond — not rigid picks that could introduce the wrong kind of flex into the panel at a critical moment. We work in small increments, re-warming any section that begins to cool before it’s fully released. On a phone this size, that process takes longer than on any other device in the S20 family, and we budget time accordingly.
  3. Once the back glass is fully free, we inspect the entire frame perimeter and remove all adhesive residue. Any residue remaining on the frame creates gaps in the seal on the new glass — reducing water resistance and allowing dust and debris to work their way inside.
  4. Replacement back glass goes on with fresh adhesive. We apply even clamping pressure around the full perimeter and allow proper cure time before returning the phone. Full function check — cameras, wireless charging, display, fingerprint sensor — before it leaves our hands.

We stock Galaxy S20 Ultra back glass at our locations in Cosmic Gray, Cloud White, and Cosmic Black. Back glass repairs are typically completed in under two and a half hours. Pricing is on our Samsung repair page.
