Unless you’ve been living under a well-ventilated rock this summer, you already know how hot it’s been. In fact – it’s trending to be one of the hottest summers on record. What you might not be aware of is that this heat has an effect on the batteries in your life as well. From your car to your smartphone, to your tablet to all other portable electronics you own. So what can you do to prepare these lifelines for doing battle in the summer? Here are a few tips to help squeeze a few more good months out of them.
- Try to charge your battery when it gets to about 15%. The “sweet spot” for charging batteries is the 15% to 80% range.
- Try not to charge your device when it doesn’t need a charge. Batteries are rated for approximately 800-1000 charges so charging unnecessarily just makes them age quicker.
- Keep them out of the heat whenever possible. Direct sun exposure can cause premature battery bloating.
- Turn off any unnecessary apps that may be running in the background and thus consuming battery life.
- Adjust the backlight display down at night or whenever it isn’t needed. The display is a big consumer of energy.
- Use only approved chargers. It might be tempting to buy an inexpensive charger from the gas station while you’re on the go, but these type of chargers often don’t comply with the OEM standards and can cause pre-mature battery wear or even damage to your phone’s motherboard.
- Check your device’s battery health every 3 months. For Apple devices it’s simple. Navigate to Settings > General > Battery. A battery health of 85% or less means you need to start considering replacement.
