Why Isnt My Phone Charging – All Mobile Matters
Below, we walk through the six most likely causes — ranked in order of how frequently we see them — along with what you can expect in terms of cost and repair time.
If you’ve ever plugged in your iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, or iPad overnight only to wake up and find it sitting at the same battery percentage, you know exactly how frustrating that moment is. At All Mobile Matters — serving Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, and Tucson, Arizona — this is one of the most common calls we receive. The good news: in the vast majority of cases, the fix is fast, affordable, and requires no more than an hour in our store.
Below, we walk through the six most likely causes — ranked in order of how frequently we see them — along with what you can expect in terms of cost and repair time.
1. Dirty or Blocked Charge Port
This is, by far, the most common culprit. Think about where your phone lives throughout the day — in your front pocket, a purse, a gym bag, or a car cupholder. Over time, lint, dust, and fine debris work their way into the charge port. Every time you plug in your cable, that debris has nowhere to go but deeper inside the port, eventually creating a physical barrier between the cable and the charging contacts.
Our recommendation: Do not attempt to clean the port yourself. Using the wrong tool, an inappropriate chemical, or applying pressure in the wrong direction can cause permanent, irreparable damage to the device. Our technicians perform professional charge port cleanings using the correct instruments and techniques.
- Cost: $25 flat
- What’s included: Full cleaning of the charge port, bottom speaker grille, and ear speaker grille
- Time: Typically completed while you wait
If you’re in the Scottsdale or Tempe area, simply book an appointment online or walk in — no prior notice needed for a cleaning.
2. Broken or Damaged Charge Port
If the port has gone uncleaned for an extended period, or if a cable was forced in at an angle, the internal connector pins can bend or break entirely. Even a small amount of liquid entering the port — from rain, a water bottle, or a sweaty workout — can corrode the contacts and render the port non-functional.
The good news: charge port replacement is one of the most common repairs we perform, and we keep parts in stock for the vast majority of Apple iPhone and Samsung models, as well as many other Android devices.
- Starting cost: $69
- Estimated repair time: Approximately one hour
- Availability: Most ports stocked in-store; same-day repair in most cases
3. Worn-Out Battery
Modern smartphone batteries are lithium-ion cells rated for approximately 1,000 full charge cycles. After that threshold, you’ll begin to notice the battery draining faster than expected, the device shutting off at 20% or 30%, or eventually, an inability to hold a charge at all. This is not a defect — it’s simply the natural lifespan of the technology.
The solution is straightforward: a battery replacement. All Mobile Matters can diagnose battery health and replace the battery for nearly all smartphones, tablets, and laptop computers.
- Starting cost: $59
- Devices covered: iPhone, iPad, Samsung, most Android phones, and laptops
- Time: Most battery replacements completed within one hour
If you’re unsure whether your battery is the issue, bring your device to any of our locations serving Mesa, Chandler, or Tucson and we’ll run a diagnostic for you.
4. Using a Non-Certified or Incompatible Charger
When you misplace your original charger, it’s tempting to grab a replacement from a gas station or discount retailer. While these cables will often initiate a charge, they rarely deliver the correct amperage, voltage, and wattage that your specific device requires. Over time, this mismatch puts undue stress on the battery and the charge port — and can accelerate the failures described above.
Best practice: Always use the original manufacturer cable and adapter whenever possible. If you need a replacement, look for products that carry Apple MFi (Made for iPhone/iPad) certification for Apple devices. All Mobile Matters carries a selection of certified charging accessories in-store — ask a technician for a recommendation specific to your device model.
5. Using a Lower-Wattage Charger Than Your Device Requires
This is a frequently overlooked issue that has become more relevant as devices have grown more powerful. In the early days of smartphones, a 5W charger was perfectly adequate. That is no longer the case for many modern devices.
A prime example: the iPad with an M1 or M2 chip functions essentially as a compact computer and requires a minimum of 25 watts to charge reliably. Connecting it to a 5W or 10W adapter will result in charging so slow that the device may actually continue to discharge while plugged in during active use.
If you’re uncertain what wattage your device requires, call us at (480) 553-1866 or stop by any of our Arizona locations — we’re happy to verify the correct charging specifications for your device at no charge.
6. Motherboard Damage
This is the least common cause on our list, but it does occur. As mobile devices have become thinner and more powerful, the complexity of the internal motherboard has increased dramatically — and the margin for error in component repair has decreased. Liquid damage is the most frequent trigger of motherboard-level charging failure, as corrosion can affect the power management circuits responsible for regulating the charge.
All Mobile Matters does offer advanced motherboard repair services, including micro-soldering work, in select cases. However, when a motherboard is beyond repair, it may be time to consider a device replacement.
If that’s where you find yourself, we maintain an inventory of certified pre-owned smartphones that are fully tested, carrier-unlocked, and guaranteed to work with your service provider before you leave the store. We will also assist with data transfer from your old device to the replacement whenever feasible.
